Lesson language and signals: what to agree beforehand

Avoid misunderstandings when booking instruction in another language and agree how to communicate during exercises.

Confirm the teaching language

Someone replying to messages in your language is not enough. Ask who will teach and which language they will use to explain exercises. If using a second language, describe your understanding and request instructions you can repeat in your own words.

Clarify vocabulary before adding difficulty

Names for components and actions can differ between countries or schools. Clarify release, stop, wait and return before starting. The blog glossary can help with vocabulary, but specific signals must be agreed with the person leading your session.

Check understanding

After an explanation, summarise what you will do and when you should stop. Ask immediately about an unfamiliar word. Pretending to understand to avoid interrupting makes both teaching and coordination more difficult.

Agree on a communication backup

Wind, distance or an inaudible radio can prevent normal conversation. Ask which visual signals will be used and what to do without a clear instruction. Establish that agreement before environmental noise makes an alternative necessary.
