Before your first kite jump: planning a progression lesson

Questions about readiness, surroundings and instruction before adding jumps to your riding.

Jumping is not an automatic next step

Riding a short distance does not establish readiness to jump. An instructor needs to observe control, trajectory, space management and the end of manoeuvres. Describe your actual experience, including difficulties, before booking a session focused on jumping.

The surroundings are part of the assessment

Available space and other users affect what can be practised. A beach suitable for one session is not necessarily suitable for another exercise. Accept that the day’s assessment may direct the lesson towards prerequisites instead of the planned jump.

What to request when booking

Ask for assessment and progression with an adaptable goal rather than a promise of height. Find out who observes attempts, how corrections are communicated and their experience teaching this content. Purchasing hours does not guarantee a particular manoeuvre.

A useful outcome

Finishing with a clear diagnosis of missing skills may be more valuable than an isolated attempt. Keep two or three specific priorities to practise in the recommended format. Do not use spectacular videos to judge your pace or as instructions for attempting jumps without supervision.
