The connected components
The kite generates pull; the bar controls it through lines; the harness transfers part of that load to your body. The board is a separate item. Recognising these parts helps avoid confusing an instruction about the bar with one about the board while concentrating in the water.
Words about direction
Upwind is the direction the wind comes from and downwind is the direction it travels towards. Riding upwind means gaining ground towards the wind through successive tacks. Drifting describes losing ground downwind. These references are relative to the wind, not permanent equivalents of north and south.
Exercise names
Body dragging means moving through the water with the kite without riding the board. A water start gets you from the water onto the board. Relaunching means flying a kite again after it has fallen. Knowing the names does not replace practice with someone assessing the exercise.
Build a small personal glossary
After each session, write three new terms, your own definition and an example you observed. If schools use different translations, ask someone to point to the relevant equipment. A visual explanation often helps more than memorising a long list before your first lesson.
